Fort Knox (2008)
Without fluids man is doomed to die. Why not treat our basic necessity with the respect it deserves? Fort Knox is a luxurious wine rack reserved for a single bottle, a gilded cage for the most precious bubbly.

A unique design, as each object is numbered by hand. The hammered-in digits adorn the golden halter like a beautiful scar, playfully flirting with the logos engraved letters. Its simple structure, bearing resemblance to the basic wooden archetype, is just a trick to fool the over-stimulated mind.

Fort Knox doesn’t need to scream for attention with ornamental curls and provocative patterns; its decadence and weight show off just by being there – or by an attempt to lift the five hefty kilos for that matter. Beauty is ensconced in the perfect finish, precise inscription and frugal make-up. It’s the peach at each banquet, the pièce de resistance at every table, the icing on the metaphorical cake. Eat as much cake you like, since gold will never lose its value.

Fort Knox arrogantly winks at its heritage, ahead of its time and impervious to decay.

Herman Miller® Aeron Chaise 1/3
Design study and prototype based on the famous Herman Miller® Aeron Chair, inspired by modern consumerism. The design is targeted at the young digital generation, which has a reputation for living a rather sedentary and TV-filled existence. It takes the ergonomic office chair to the next level by making it a recliner-like lounger suitable for supine computing.

KYDEX® Kitchen (2005)
The KYDEX® Kitchen is a modular cooking facility, whereby the theme for each step of the design process was food preparation. The principle aim during the design of this “kitchen” was to exclude conventions, façades and hidden functionality.

On the basis of the given theme 'health', I decided to formulate as broad a definition as possible for myself and then to apply it to that which, in my view, represented every aspect of health: the preparation of godly food.

I came to the conclusion that there is a direct relationship between health and the ability to anticipate one’s surroundings whilst retaining one’s identity. This means more specifically that a form of existence, such as a structure or an organism, is healthy when it is able to endure ordeals from its surroundings whilst remaining undamaged. This is true for man and animal, but a healthy situation or “healthy design” may also be tested in this way. The final design therefore needed to satisfy man’s need to prepare food but was also required to possess a strong, unambiguous construction of its own.
With the help of a chef, I analysed the basic operations in a kitchen and thus determined the simplest and most efficient shapes and measurements. Fresh ingredients, their preparation and the supply of water and heat formed the basis for my design.

The biggest step was choosing the materials and the processing method. After extensive research I discovered a recently developed synthetic material called KYDEX® sheet. KYDEX® sheet is a high-quality thermoplastic which can be glued onto a base by means of a variable membrane press, also a recently developed technique. This technique allowed me to cover the various shapes in MDF, which is easily manipulated, water-, impact- and chemical-resistant and conform the latest hygiene standards. This comes in an unlimited number of colours and many different textures.

The kitchen consists of four parts which are put together without means of attachment. Gas, water and drainage are easily and quickly connected by means of simple couplings and complete the kitchen visually and functionally.

Of liever why?

Why can’t we just…

Sigarenkoker (2001)

Diendoek
'Diendoek' or 'The Butler' is a wine stand commissioned by Artihove.

The shape is based on the harmonica-shaped wooden wine rack available in any household appliances store. The material used here is highly polished polycarbonate in black and transparent. The accompanying butlers’ towel is embroidered with the text:

‘Kunst is niet het brood maar de wijn des levens’ (Art is not the bread, it’s the wine in our lives’

(Translation: the course of a particle in function of time)

The engraved text refers to the physical definition of a wave. The principle of an ever-changing wave and random functionality (by defining it as such) is combined in this object.

Handgedecoreerd Toiletpapier (2003)
